Tom doesn’t understand why his wife Nancy is seeking shelter in the Amalgamation Holiness Church of God, but he’s brought along a lawyer to set her straight. But Rogers Canfield, for all of his Southern charm, can’t talk his way around Nancy’s newfound love for the Church preacher Obediah Buckthorn. He’s several years her senior, but Tom’s more disturbed by the spinsters, queers, and crazies that make up the congregation. It all gets weirder when Buckthorn and his cadre of oddballs find deliverance in lifethreatening ritual – and even weirder when Tom and Canfield get a taste of the divine by joining in. Will any of it get Tom closer to Nancy?
